A Poem For My Granddaughter
Hope For Emily
She loves baby dolls and horses
and a purple dinosaur.
She does not care about such things
as politics and war,
but her parents care about them
because her future is at stake,
though she’s just a tiny toddler
with two candles on her cake.
What will this world be like
when she reaches twenty one,
and will her parent’s concerns matter
when all is said and done?
Will she grow into a woman
that will make her parents proud?
Will she stand up for her rights,
if that is still allowed?
Maybe the world will be quite different
than what her parents now hope for,
for the child who loves dolls and horses
and a purple dinosaur…
